Common Household Heating Problems

Common Household Heating Problems

If you are finding it harder and harder to stay warm inside your home when it is cold outside, you should know about some common problems that exist in many homes.

Insulation Problems – It is common to experience colder temperatures in homes that are not properly insulated – especially in older homes. You should make sure that your attic is properly insulated which includes adding insulation to the attic access door to prevent drafts. The recommended amount of insulation in the attic is generally 6 inches. For walls, you should use as much insulation as you can possibly fit between the outer walls and the drywall.

Window & Door Cracks – Most of your home’s heat is lost through cracks around your windows and doors and this is where proper sealing comes in. Check around your windows and doors and feel for any drafts coming in. Where you find cracks, seal them with caulk. This should significantly improve your home’s energy efficiency.

Wasted Heat – If you have rooms in your home that are not used often, you are wasting valuable heat. Close off the vents in those rooms and keep the doors closed. This will cause the heat to pass by those vents and enter other rooms in your home.

Furnace Problems – If you feel your furnace isn’t working properly, you may need to call a professional HVAC technician to diagnose and fix any issues, but you might be able to troubleshoot some problems on your own. Make sure the furnace is switched on since sometimes pets or family members can accidentally bump the switch and turn it off without realizing it. Check to make sure the pilot light is on. If it isn’t, you can try to re-light it on your own. If this troubleshooting doesn’t work, there may be other issues that require a professional. Remember – it is best to have your furnace inspected once a year to make sure it always works efficiently.

It is important that you don’t get in over your head so only fix the issues that you are confident you can fix correctly. When it comes to furnace problems, it is usually in your best interest to call a professional. There are many things that can make the winter months challenging. Your home is where you should be able to relax and unwind so make sure you are comfortable in your home year round.
